Can turtles pass on diseases to humans?

Yes, turtles actually carry the Salmonella bacteria, which causes a human disease called salmonellosis. It’s estimated that annually 74,000 cases of salmonellosis in humans are transmitted by reptiles in the United States. The sale of turtles less than 4 inches in the United States has been banned for over 25 years, with the intention of preventing turtle-associated salmonellosis. An estimated 100,000 cases of salmonellosis in children have been prevented because of this measure.

Yes they can, so you should be careful when you are handling a turtle, just like any other animal.
