Can trees be used as biomass for power plants?

Trees, like almost any other plant material, can be successfully used as biomass to fuel a power plant.  When trees selective for their fast growth are grown specifically for use as biomass, this can be a sustainable way of providing people with electricity.  You have to be careful about this energy source though, because in other cases it is not sustainable at all.  This includes cases where natural forest ecosystems are cleared to produce timber for biomass burning.  Like many potentially renewable energy sources, the sustainability and long-term viability of tree biomass all depends on how the project is handled.
