Can tectonic plate shifting have catastrophic effects?

Yes. A good example is the Pacific Ring of Fire, the area about 25,000 in length running up the western coast of the Americas and down the eastern coast of Asia, affecting the many island nations in the western Pacific. The Ring of Fire lies atop shifting tectonic plates and contains more than 450 volcanoes, or 75 percent of the entire world’s volcanoes, and is notorious for earthquakes as well.
