Can sharks really swim up rivers and survive in fresh water?

A few species of sharks (bull shark, river shark) can successfully live in fresh and salt water, but most ocean dwelling sharks could not survive very long if they swam up a river into fresh water.
For instance, this article tells us that a Great White shark in fresh water would be unable to osmoregulate and get real sick real fast. (Osmoregulation is a body’s power to maintain the proper proportion of water. All organisms do it.)
