The process of extracting shale can distress the environment: “to produce gas from shale, tons of water, sand and chemicals must be pumped deep down into the wells to loosen it.” As a potential ramification, groundwater supplies may be polluted. However, those concerns are somewhat tempered given that it’s still an improvement compared to carbon emissions and it’s considered the cleanest burning fossil fuel (as it’s natural gas).
