can a satellite navigation system be used to save energy when you drive?

    In a sense, yes.

A satellite navigation system can be used to find the shortest possible route from your start point to destination, which would save gas (assuming the use of an automative form of transportation).

There are, of course, other factors that would come into play–the type of vehicle used, including emission of greenhouse gases, etc–but even then it could be said that the navigation system would reduce the relative energy expended as compared to that which would be used without it.

This also assumes, of course, the operators lack of familiarity with the area which would preclude the need for a navigation system altogether.
