Can a river be polluted and still be ok to produce hydro power?

Hydroelectricity is electricity generated by hydro power, i.e., the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. Because only the force of the current of water is needed to produce energy, the clarity and cleanness of the water is not a factor. However, the cleanness of it may cause problems with how rapid or able the water is to flow from one point to another.

Depending on the pollutants present in the water, there could be materials that may degrade the dam structure or turbines, such as some heavy metals or acidic compounds.  Over time, this may affect the functionality and safety of the dam.
