Can renewable power plants utilize existing electricity transmission lines?

I some cases, renewable power plants can take advantage of power lines that already exist – an in fact that is what many of the renewable plants build so far in the US do.  However, as we attempt to meet more of our energy needs with renewables, it is going to be necessary to install new transmission lines.  This is because existing lines were installed mostly to connect fossil fuel plants to the grid, and the best places for generating renewable energy do not necessarily line up with the locations of existing fossil fuel-based power plants.  There are many parts of the US that get huge amounts of sunshine or wind, and would be great for developing renewable energy.  But there may not be existing transmission lines to connect those areas to the grid, and new transmission lines will probably need to be built.
