Can reduced oil imports save us money?

Yep. Domestic oil doesn’t have nearly as many shipping costs, for one. Additionally, reducing oil is generally a cheaper solution if an alternative is presenting itself.

We also don’t have to worry about any kinds of tariffs and trade barriers and whatnot.

Certainly it would save money. However, the trade-off would be (if we imported no oil) that we would have 60% less oil to use. That would mean no driving of any vehicles 4 days a week, no heating, no jet planes flying. It is not possible to replace the imports with domestic production – it is just not there.
