Can raccoons attack humans?

In general, raccoons don’t attack humans, although it is not completely unheard of.  If they are left alone, they will more often than not go their own way without conflict.  A quick search pulled up more news stories about raccoons getting into scuffs with pets which makes sense – animals may get territorial or playful and engage the raccoon when their owner wouldn’t have.

If raccoons get too close, they can be scared off by a person appearing as large as possible (standing up and waving their arms) and, if necessary, throwing rocks or spraying them down with water.
