In general, raccoons don’t attack humans, although it is not completely unheard of. If they are left alone, they will more often than not go their own way without conflict. A quick search pulled up more news stories about raccoons getting into scuffs with pets which makes sense – animals may get territorial or playful and engage the raccoon when their owner wouldn’t have.
If raccoons get too close, they can be scared off by a person appearing as large as possible (standing up and waving their arms) and, if necessary, throwing rocks or spraying them down with water.
