Preventive steps can be taken if a person thinks they may have come into contact with a common carrier of the disease. Only 27 cases of rabies have been documented in the United States since 1990, so it is rare to develop a full case. Medical treatment should be sought immediately.
First Step: Wound care through soap and virus killing cleanser.
Second Step: There is an injection that gives you protection against rabies temporarily. This is the HRIG or Human Rabies Immune Globulin. Then there is a vaccine that can be used afterward.
For animals a vaccination is the best way to protect your domesticated pets. If they contract the disease and being euthanized is not an option, they must be isolated for 6 months and given the vaccine 1 month before release.
