Can a geothermal plant run forever?

Depends on what exactly you’re calling ‘forever’. The plant can run for a very long time as long as it uses water and heat at sustainable levels. There were cases when water had to be injected into the well and production lowered due to local depletion. Some types of geothermal systems can cause earthquakes and surface subsidence. As for longer-term problems, there’s equipment wear and failure that may stop the plant operation if not replaced in time. On an even larger time scale, there are tectonic movement related changes in available heat.
