Can planes become more efficient if they changed the way that they look?

Absolutely! Just as car manufacturers are making their hybrids and electric vehicles more aerodynamic, airplanes can become more aerodynamic by changing the way they look. In addition to airplanes and passenger cars, pretty much any vehicle can be made more aerodynamic through changing the shape of the vehicle. This is often accomplished by a bunch of engineers who place their designs in a wind-tunnel and observe them to see how well they fare. Professional cyclists also use wind-tunnels to determine the most aerodynamic position for how they should sit, where they should keep their water bottles, etc.
