That depends on what people are willing to withstand — would you be able to deal with an 85 degree living room if the temperature outside was 90 or 100? They definitely can work and do some things to shade and cool homes, but if people are not willing to deal with the somewhat uncomfortable conditions, then they really will not work by themselves. Perhaps an 80 percent passive system, supplemented by some active climate control (a high-efficiency A/C unit running every so often) will do the trick. I really think the answer to this question is Yes, they can work — but only if people are willing to be tough and realize they are sweating so they can help save the earth!
