Can oysters live in fresh water?

No, oysters cannot live in fresh water.  The only time you would see an oyster for any period of time in fresh water would be at a seafood restaurant, in fresh water tanks, to clear off any remaining sand and grit from the oysters about to be served.  The term fresh-water pearls is often misleading as they are actually produced by mussels.  This can often be a source of confusion regarding whether or not oysters can actually live in fresh water.
