Can New Urbanism be used to combat the problems of sprawl?

New Urbanism provides many principles of living that may curb environmental destruction. Most ecological damage stems from urban areas, meaning that if even most people in this community followed these principles, damage can be reduced. However, with sprawl, low-population areas in suburbs surrounding the city are forced to travel to these denser, urban areas for things like work. New Urbanism entails concepts like walkability, sustainability, easy transport to reduce long, difficult transport. If the population density were more equalized, everything would have to be available all over–housing, sustainable transport, jobs that could be walked to. A large step such as having urban families move to less populous suburban areas would be the primary way to use new urbanism against urban sprawl.
