Can minerals be identified by color?

Typically, minerals cannot be identified simply by color. Many minerals share the same color and it requires further classification by certain characteristics to identify them. Other characteristics that are used to identify minerals, in addition to color, include hardness, luster, streak, cleavage, fracture, and specific gravity (which indicates the mass specific to that mineral). Some minerals can be too complex to identify by the naked eye and require x-ray diffraction analysis to define the particular chemical structure of the mineral.
