Yes, microorganisms can grow in liquid below pH 4. Organisms which thrive in areas from pH 1 to pH 5 are called acidophiles. These organisms consist of eukaryotes, bacteria, and archaea. They can live in sulfuric pools, mine drainage areas, and even our stomachs! One type of organism called <i>Ferroplasma</i> even grows in a pH 0 mine drainage area in Iron Mountain, California.
