If you want an opinion as to whether we can do so before we have no choice in the matter, I would say not a chance, not even a remote chance. It is far, far too late already.
Since oil and other fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources, there will come a point where they will be depleted and mankind will have to adopt new practices. The rise in sales of hydribs and electrical cars and the development of new fuel technologies has demonstrated a significant turn away from practices that are not viable. It does remain to be seen how long the complete shift will take though.
