Can the kidney repair itself after it has been damaged?

    So long as scarring and other problems that might prevent capillary regrowth have not developed, it is possible to rebuild kidney function. But no, they will not regenerate itself like the liver will. But it can regain function, with some effort.

    The kidney can repair itself, and quite well too.  There is research being conducted that is attempting to harness to kidney’s ability to regenerate so that kidney transplants will no longer be necessary.
