Yes, rattlesnakes can live without their rattler. A common misconception is that rattlesnakes rattle before striking. This is simply not true for several reasons. Rattlers are composed of segments of keratin that can easily be damaged or broken off. Damaged rattlers can be almost inaudible, while sometime the whole rattler is lost in a fight. (It should be noted that sometimes rattlesnakes don’t have enought time to rattle.) Baby rattlesnakes are born without a rattler. Instead they have a small area called a button that makes no sound.
