It depends on where you live. But in some areas you can purchase electricity from a multiple sources. If you live near the Hoover Dam, you have no choice but to buy your energy from a renewable source. Usually the power companies are in control here, but more and more they are going to start adding renewable energy to their supply lines.
You can buy “green power” with many power utilities. While this is not necessarily from renewable resources, it provides money to the power companies to expand the green power accessible to the power grid. The company can also use this money to buy more kilowatt hours of green energy as well.
