Not in the United States. In 1989 the UN Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) banned the ivory trade as well as the trade of other commodities obtained through the illegal hunting and poaching of endangered species. Although in 2002 the ban was partially lifted in order to allow for a one-time auction in Japan of pre-ban ivory, the ban is now back in effect making any importation of ivory a violation of international law.
