What do you mean by “rival”? Buying a car is a private, subjective decision. For some, they will choose hydrogen power, so for them, that car has certainly rivaled all others. For some who choose not to own a car, that rivals all cars.
If you mean can they become economically competitive to the point that more hydrogen powered cars are sold than others, then it comes down to the same economic factors as control purchases of all cars: cost of the car, cost to fuel it, convenience of fuel, maintenance ease, ans subjective factors such as color and style. This is the same for all cars in terms of subjective “popularity.”
