Replacing an older, conventional gasoline-powered vehicle with a newer hybrid vehicle will definitely decrease your emissions (both CO2 and other pollutants), as hybrid engines are smaller, rely less on gasonline, and generate their own electricity.
However, each battery of a hybrid car uses several kilograms of “rare earth” minerals, 90% of which are extracted in an environmentally-harmful manner in rural China and render the local areas uninhabitable.
So, though hybrids do decrease emissions (and therefore theoretically reduce climate change), there are other effects which may not make buying a hybrid the solution to reducing your environmental impact.
