Many plants in Nantucket have brown leaves since hurricane Irene. Is this from wind? The rain was not as heavy as other storms.
If plants are overwatered, they can turn brown. Just because it is not a heavy rainfall doesn’t mean it is too much rain. Steady rainfall (even if light) over a long period of time can still leave plants and trees waterlogged.
Many times trees and plants that survive the high winds of a hurricane will fall victim to the salt water carried inland by the storm. This causes leaves to turn brown and fall off in the weeks following a hurricane.
