Like many businesses, grocery stores can save money by recycling. Plastic bags returned by consumers can be reused, thereby mitigating the amount of bags having to be ordered and paid for by the store. Grocery stores with recycling programs may also be eligble for certain benefits. In Massachusetts, for example, grocery stores that obtain Supermarket Recycling Program Certification will not have comprehensive inspection of their trash at disposal facilities. Such stores save, on average, $20,000 to $40,000 per store per year in disposal costs.
