Can a goldfish really survive being frozen and defrosted?

This study would terrify PETA! It is not very ethical to systematically record the slow death that would likely result from being placed in a freezer. Thus there is a clear lack of official data on this matter. There is some truth to this tale in that goldfish can survive when a pond freezes over and the temperatures are very close to freezing. They do not need to surface in order to keep their bodies oxygenated. I would speculate that they would suffer from anoxia and their soft tissue would dry out as it froze. No fish remain in a pond that completely freezes over in the winter as stated by this goldfish information website.
