BPA can leach into the water from the plastic, such as regular water bottles. The leaching happens over time or if exposed to heat, like if you leave a bottle of water in the sun in your car too long and then drink it, there’s a good chance you’ve exposed yourself to BPA then. The water can’t go bad per se, but it’ll become slightly carcinogenic and have the endocrine disruptor BPA in it, and probably won’t taste that great.
