Definitely, food waste is most commonly diverted from the landfills to make compost, which can be a great fertilizer for crops and landscaping. Smaller amounts of food waste (only fruits and vegetables) can be placed in a bin full of earthworms and other organic materials. the earthworms will eat the food and turn it into a nutrient rich soil. Larger amounts of food waste are placed in heaps and the microbes and other organisms in the pile will slowly digest the food into smaller components that can be returned back to the soil.
