Parasites WANT the fish to live when they are attached to it, because the parasite gets its food from the fish. If the parasite (a lamprey for instance), just attached to a fish and killed it right away, it would be more of just a predator rather than a parasite.
Lampreys attach to a fish and suck their blood. The fish is able to stay alive, but it is weakened and often does die.
Some parasites, like intestinal worms, live off the food that the animal eats, so they NEED the host animal to stay alive.
