Generally, humans and animals can not transmit illnesses across species. However, there have been some very rare cases involving transmission of staph infections from human to pet (although a ferret was not one of the pets involved in any of these cases). Humans carry staph bacteria without experiencing any symptoms, and in this way they can unknowingly pass it on without knowing. It’s not fatal unless the subject is not treated with the proper antibiotics.
It is possible for other bacteria and viruses to spread between humans by way of pets or other animals, who act as unwitting transporters.
