No, methane can not be captured once cropland has been composted. Composting means that carbon is trapped as organic matter and so methane, which also has carbon in it, CH4, can no longer be released into the atmosphere. So a farmer has to make a decision whether or not to compost or to put their crops into a landfill to harvest methane gas over time. Evidence suggests that composting yields more benefits as more carbon is trapped than methane is produced.
