Absolutely, if you substitute them and maintain a diet!
Obviously a diet with less calories or increasing calories burnt are the only way to lose weight. But if you eat a peach instead of a can of peaches, or eat a hamburger you made yourself instead of fast food, there are significant health benefits!
Anything with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in it is a poor choice — no matter what the corn council TV ads in the US say — the human body can simply not process it. Everything from soft drinks to hamburgers has HFCS in it. It is cheap, untaxed and there is an abundent supply.
Less quality food is always a better option than more cheap, processed food!
