If the earth was left alone to recycle buildings it could accomplish a lot in terms of destruction and breaking down materials. Alan Weisman’s site (www.theworldwithoutus.com) has a nice video in the multimedia section that shows what would happen to the average house if left abandoned for several years. However, certain materials take longer to biodegrade and degrade than others. Even while certain materials are still degrading, they can become covered up and create sites for alternate habitats, essentially being reused for another purpose, as Weisman’s illustration shows.
