Can the earth absorb more or less carbon dioxide than trees?

Carbon is stored in three areas: the Earth’s atmosphere, the ocean, and the land biosphere (forests and associated ecosystems).  Approximately 93% of the worlds carbon is stored in the ocean.  Trees counteract the rising carbon emissions, but they do not store as much as the ocean.
