In 2006 a study was released in the Integrative Cancer Therapies that said scientists had discovered that dogs are able to detect cancer. They can pick out early and late stage lung and breast cancers from control groups, just by smelling the breath of humans. After smelling samples from participants who had recently been diagnosed with lung and breast cancer and those who were completely cancer-free, the dogs had an 88-97% success rate of detecting the cancer samples. Researchers came to the conclusion that this ability of dogs has the helpful potential to reduce uncertainty in cancer diagnoses.
