Can diesel engines be environment friendly?

The diesel engine gets a bad rap due to poor designs of these engines years ago.  However, the diesel engine was originally designed to run on vegetable oil and were then adapted to run on a type of petroleum.  But diesel run cars traditionally have better fuel mileage and produce less greenhouse gasses and are commonly found throughout Europe.  Car manufactures such as Volkswagon, Mercedes, and Jeep are marketing biodiesel and diesel cars as green alternatives to driving.
