Can cruise ships dump untreated sewage into the ocean?

Yes unfortunately. While U.S. laws prohibit ships from dumping anything within 3 miles of the shore, there are no international laws that keep ships from dumping waste into the ocean. For instance, according to Kahea, the Hawaiian-Environmental Alliance, “tons of raw sewage, garbage and even hazardous waste are produced and disposed of each day by a single ship.”
