That really depends on what those offsets are actually doing. There’s a lot of controversy over offsets and what they actually do to reduce carbon emissions. Many feel that they are just like the papal indulgences offered in earlier centuries…they allow the guilty to continue their damaging acts while just paying to cover up their tracks. By buying carbon offsets, you’re not reducing net carbon in the atmosphere, you’re only putting money toward actions that may act to reduce the carbon (or may not, depending on what their methods are.) A better way to become carbon neutral would be to look for alternative sources of energy and to maximize efficiency.
