It does not appear that coral can survive or thrive in fresh water. The coral reefs we see in aquariums and on snorkeling trips are actually colonies of living organisms that build upon the previous generations’ coral skeletons. These colonies are held together by layers of calcium carbonate derived from the calcium ions that are found in seawater. These ions are in much greater concentration in seawater.
