Aquaponics can be a good way to grow organic fruit and vegetables. The first USDA organic certified lettuce grown using aquaponics is from a farm in Hawaii that has been certified since 2007. Aquaponics uses less energy, nutrients and water than conventional farming. The initial expense can be high, buying all the equipment, but eventually the farmer has too crops (the food crop, and the fish crop) to sell. This is a growing market and will play a vital role in changing the way our food system works.
