Animals such as jellyfish are rarely ever preserved because they have soft bodies.  In 2007, a jellyfish fossil was found in Utah and estimated to be 500 million years old.  It was preserved in fine sediment instead of sand, enabling it to be fossilized.  Geologists have a hard time dating creatures like jellyfish because of the geological record’s bias against soft bodied animals.
