-More than 46,000 pieces of plastic (including bottles) float in every square mile of the ocean. The plastic can look like food to many animals, and causes the deaths of millions of sea animals.
-About 9 billion plastic bottles are produced every year in the US.
-Americans use 4 million plastic bottles every hour.
-Only 1 out of every 4 bottles is recycled.
-It takes twice as much energy to burn a plastic bottle as it does to recycle one.
-Making new plastic bottles requires fossil fuels.
The consumption of plastic bottles has jumped dramatically in the past fifty years. The Beverage Marketing Corporation states that in 1976 the average American used 1.6 gallons of bottled water and in 2006, it went to 28.3 gallons. Also plastics are not 100% recyclable, once they are recycled it is downgraded into a less usable or marketable plastic.
