It will depend on what kinds of activities you will be trying to do. If you will be doing direct things out in the environment, you probably will need to have someone on staff who knows what is happening. If you are doing things like advocacy and education, you could read up on that on your own as long as you have access to reliable sources. To start a nonprofit takes a lot of time and effort, and you will be under scrutiny so be sure that whatever you do, you do it correctly and openly.
