Fruits and vegetables are better foods with which to sustainably support a population than meat. This graph shows that it takes 54 calories of fossil fuel to make 1 calorie of protein from beef. It only takes 3 calories of fossil fuel to make 1 calorie of protein from corn and only 2 for 1 calorie from soybeans.

It’s important to grow the plants in the right locations and the right season, as well.  Currently it’s easy to get almost any type of fruit/vegetable any time of the year in a supermarket, but growing plants out of season isn’t very sustainable.  In addition, using natural compost instead of fertilizer makes gardens more sustainable.
