It depends on how many of the roots are exposed and you plan on amputating. If it’s just one root you should be fine since aspen’s are pretty big trees and have extensive root systems. However, if you cut off too many roots the tree would be in danger of dying because it wouldn’t be getting enough nutrients. I attached a link on the proper way to remove roots. It is for pine trees, but it should be the same for basically all trees.
