Nope! If it’s just in the ground it won’t reach the temperatures necessary to make it biodegrade, which it would if you put it in a compost pile. Also, dyes in the paper could leach into the ground and be harmful to the soil and organisms in it. If you can’t compost, whether in a backyard pile or using vermiculture (look it up! it’s awesome!), go ahead and recycle it. At least that way it has a chance of being made into other paper products first–like paper towels–which can THEN be composted.
