The burning of wood is currently the largest use of energy derived from a solid fuel biomass, and can be used for cooking and heating, and occasionally for fueling steam engines and steam turbines that generate electricity.
Although wood burning is a great source of energy, there are environmental impacts to consider, such as smoke pollution and the impact on the health of the forest. It’s important to be responsible and minimize the emissions from a wood fire. We can practice responsible wood burning habits by building small hot fires, using seasoned wood or manufactured non-wax fire logs, and using low emission wood-burning hearth products (such as wood-burning stoves and fireplace inserts certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
We can also be by burning sustainably harvested wood. Sustainable harvesting involves selective, uneven age cutting so that an acceptable level of biomass and biodiversity is maintained permanently on the site.
Although burning wood can be used for cooking, heating, and for powering a few out-of-date technologies, it is not a sufficient source of energy for the kinds of devices we use daily. In addition, there are some safety concerns associated with using wood burning to heat a home. One of which is the build up of Creosote, a dangerous chemical that can cause fires.
