Is burning candles bad for the environment?

Yes. The main harm to the environment comes in the form of air pollution. Burning candles (of any kind) produces smoke which pollutes the air. Certain candles contain substances that may be particularly harmful when burned, such as parafin and lead.

Not only is it harmful for the environment, it’s none to helpful for YOU. Wicks commonly contain lead, which can disperse into your air as you burn candles. Candles also release low levels of chemicals such as acetone, benzene, styrene, and mercury. Not so romantic.

Soy candles are usually a safer alternative.
